When the reservoirs of the Derwent Valley in Derbyshire were built, the villages of Ashopton and Derwent were lost beneath the water. When levels are low, traces of the villages can still be seen.

People here return to such places, too. Just to see and remember where they played as kids

There are videos on Youtube of the villages revealed in a dry year… someone remembered them, but soon, no-one will.

I emailed it to my sister too. She’s as much a purple freak as me. I taught her well!!
But, now I think we need to plan our next vacay there!!

My own place is pretty much shades of purple too, but mainly because I was given a lot of purple paint and, mixed with loads of white, that went a long way 🙂

The haiku and the photograph are both very evocative. It’s strange to think of a “ghost village” hidden under the water. It reminds me a little of the movie Brigadoon.

There are a lot of tales about towns engulfed by lakes, but this one was deliberate and it really is a odd feeling to look out over the water and know what lies beneath.

Your haiku is fantastic. It’s rather eerie to think of two whole villages underwater.
