First in for the photo prompt this week…
They had reached the top of the long, stone staircase. A little breathless, they stood in the flickering sunlight, looking down into the mill stream below them.
“The walls have ears,” commented Melissa.
“They’re just old, stone walls,” replied her husband.
“No,” insisted Melissa. “They have ears. Real EARS. See? Look, over there. See? They’re ears? Can’t you see them?”
He looked harder, squinting … and then, he felt a gentle push. And he was falling, falling … and distantly the sound of tinkling laughter. Was that the sound of walls … laughing?

Love it! And I also love old watermills – there was one down the road from where I grew up. It was absolutely lovely….. one of my favorite places to go and sit, listen to the water, the trees and the birds.

The water here has been diverted back to the river and the place no longer sings…except with the birdsong and the rustle of leaves.

Oops! Hit “send” accidentally… I meant to say, “Sad, but at least the birdsong and the rustle of leaves are still there, not ugly concrete and smog.”

This place is far from such ugliness and still very beautiful.
