No one would want me
Older, black and going grey
Wouldn’t stand a chance
*
If I were homeless
Condemned to long loneliness
Behind shelter bars
*
Judged unlovable
By fear and superstition
Because I am black
*
I would wait longer
For the touch of love unless…
The needle took me
*
Yet it is written
See -“I am black but comely”
With a golden heart
*
Forget appearance
Look with the eyes of the heart
Beyond prejudice

About Sue Vincent
Sue Vincent was a Yorkshire born writer, esoteric teacher and a Director of The Silent Eye. She was immersed in the Mysteries all her life. Sue maintained a popular blog and is co-author of The Mystical Hexagram with Dr G.M.Vasey. Sue lived in Buckinghamshire, having been stranded there due to an accident with a blindfold, a pin and a map. She had a lasting love-affair with the landscape of Albion, the hidden country of the heart. Sue passed into spirit at the end of March 2021.
We do far too often make our decisions or opinions based on the exterior, instead of looking deeper to see what’s on the inside.

Yes we do, and not just with dogs unfortunately.

Ah, sadly so true it is to judge, instead of looking at the beauty within.

The beloved dog shows us all how to love unconditionally, without judgement on our outer selves. ♡ Sue, I am sure he is missed very much. If I remember correctly, you lost him to a much better place. . .

I lost one just like this one, along time ago… but Ani is still very much with me 🙂

Aaaagh, Sue, that’s heart-breaking! And also why we adopted our two senior citizens – people wanted the younger, smaller handsome dog but not the huge funny-looking one. They’re both gorgeous to us, and so happy to be together 🙂

Sadly it is true, Carolyn, and black pets as far less likely to find a home. My adopted Ani is a good ambassador for them I hope.

Bizarre, isn’t it, Sue – I’d heard that about black cats & find it ridiculous 😦 We have a black & white adopted cat & did have a very black dog adopted as a senior, whom we still miss! Ani is adorable 🙂

The figures on that are awful for black pets… and oldies. Ani was born in rescue… she adopted us though 🙂

Ani’s sure prolific lately. Sounds like she needs more cuddles and ball tossing. Glad she’s one of the lucky ones and found her human.

Wonderful, Sue. We have had so many adoptees over the years and they were wonderful pets. Of course you know I’d take Ani in a cold minute!

I think there are a good many who would if she ever needed a home, but how many are overlooked through age and colour?

Too true. It’s so sad how often black dogs are passed up just for their color. It’s completely irrational and a lot of wonderful furry ones miss out on loving homes. Same for black cats.

It is very strange, when they are such beautiful creatures, inside and out. The only dog who ever bit me was a cute and tiny terrier…and definitely not black.

Unfortunately very true. There are a disproportionate amount of black coated dogs left unadopted. Yet the same large heart is found beneath the fur.

It beats me why anyone would overlook such lovely dogs… either through fur colour of age. At 5 years old, Ani would be ‘too old’ and at much higher risk of being euthanised. Yet her energy levels are higher than most puppies given half a chance, she’s house trained and good as gold, even is she is a bit loopy 🙂

I’d take her in a heartbeat. I would take them all, if I could.

So would I… but it is a sad fact that black dogs get overlooked.

Wow, thats a deep one.
I must admit I winced at the line, “I would wait longer, For the touch of love unless…The needle took me”. I’m too much of a dog lover to even consider that.
So often, (far too often), do we judge a book by its cover and not by the content. Sad but true.
A perfectly penned piece, Sue.

Me too, Darren, and if I had the life to allow it, I’d rescue as many as I could from that fate. Sadly, a black dog or an older one may well face that fate.
