Should the Small Dog go missing… we will know where to look….

Whenever I felt oppressed by adversity as a boy, my father was always there for me. “Don’t worry, lad,” he’d say, laying a comforting hand on my shoulder. “Always remember that as one door shuts, another one closes.”

I’ve been thinking about those words a lot recently. Janus, the Roman deity after whom January is named, was the god of doorways, beginnings and endings. He had two heads, one that looked backwards, allowing him to reflect on the past and another that faced forwards, preventing him from walking into streetlights and falling down manholes.

Although it may not always be clear because of the paper bag I’ve taken to wearing in recent years, I have only one head. Nevertheless, by the crafty expedient of turning around briefly, I too can look back on the past. For the most part, what I see as I survey 2015 and compare it to its predecessors is the same old familiar landscape of barely-paid bills, unfulfilled hopes and broken resolutions.

Thanks so much Sue for reblogging this. I really appreciate it. I promise I won’t approach Ani with that packet of sausages I got from the supermarket the other day. It’s a shame, though. She’s got real canine charisma. 🙂
