Sparrow – Cee’s photo challenge

P1050521One of the most joyousl moments I remember, both for what we saw, how we felt and how they appeared to feel, was an encounter with a small colony of sparrows.

We had chosen the only vacant table in the pub garden and there was an ancient, mossy  wall right next to us… a wall that was a hive of activity as the little flock played, nestled, nested and enjoyed the nooks and crannies between the stones.

There was, it seemed, absolutely no fear… they were used to people sitting there and we were treated to the most wonderful hour, just enjoying their presence. They came and sat on the benches with us, unafraid and curious to see if we had anything to eat that they might share. This series of pictures always makes me smile.

I was asked to join this challenge by El of Far Out in Africa. If you haven’t been over there, do have a look. Wonderful pictures and stories!

In turn, today, should she choose to accept… I nominate Barb Taub.

What is it about birds? I’ve never previously been that interested, except in birds of prey. But over the last winter, I realsed that I had permenant residents in my garden… a robin, a wagtail and a blackbird. They’re still here now, all have brought mates into the garden this spring. A couple of days ago there was a newcomer to the garden. I’d never seen him before. He hopped right up to the kitchen door bold as brass and was about to come inside until I moved, and he thought better of it. I think he was a goldcrest, but I’ll have to doublecheck that. Lovely markings though.

They do seem to have a way of finding their way into our hearts, don’t they? Nick has resident robins, bluetits, doves.. the lot. I have sparrows… and the kites 🙂

Yes, the kites! They are breathtaking! I have a very noisy crow colony in the church opposite, who sometimes come into the garden but usually fly over to the field behind me. Sometimes a pair of wild pigeons ( they look like pigeons only bigger) visit but they dont live in the garden. I love watching them, but have a particular soft spot for the robin.
