A new life

Nick, my eldest son, has made me a grandmother. There is joy when a new soul comes into the world and here, where Nick himself came so close to losing his life, the emotions are deep and complex. It is a bittersweet moment in many respects for the fairytale marriage did not have a happy ending. Six thousand miles and a painful gulf lie between my son and his son and it seems probable that neither he nor I will ever hold his child in our arms.

Even so.

This beautiful babe is my grandson, Daniel, and we can hold him in our hearts.

  5. My heart goes out to you and Nick. I know all too well what it is like to grow up away from one’s birthfather and grandparents. Mine were not quite so far, 3,000 miles away, but it was still an ocean of land to cross and I’m still navigating my way home. xoxoxo, Alethea

  16. What a beautiful child, Sue. Holding a child in your heart is just as important as holding him or her in your arms. My granddaughter was born on the west coast of the US, while I live on the east. She was 8 months old when I held her for the first time, and I had no idea how the opportunity would even come until less than a month before my visit out there in September. Keep faith that things will work out for the best, Sue. You live a life of miracles and know, through long experience, that things come together as they should- rarely how we expect that they will. I’m so happy for you, for Nick, for Daniel, and for Daniel’s mother- who loves him. May the bonds of love be strong and good to each of you. Hugs and wishes for happiness, Elizabeth

  23. Awesome Sue, I have two grandchildren in Pakistan, who I have not seen for four years. My daughter and her husband separated, and he took the two to his family’s home there. But I sit back and pray that they remain safe! Your grandson is a handsome baby. God bless you and your family!

Heartfelt congratulations! The material distance may seem painfully great now, but who knows in what ways the connections that exist in the spiritual dimension may manifest themselves as time goes on.

Félicitations to you and your son, Sue, and long and joyful life to your loverly grandson. If I have learned nothing else from your and your son’s remarkable tale of healing and triumph it is that you have enormous hearts full of courage and love, and “[w]here there is great love there are always miracles.” (Willa Cather) Love and blessings to all!
