Notes from a small dog VI

I am sorry. I have to report that she has failed abysmally in her duties as my deity this weekend. No walks, not a one. Not even in the snow. OK, she did let me play out in the stuff in the garden till one o’clock this morning, while she huddled in her fluffy blanket, but that is not quite the same as exploring the landscape with her trailing behind, camera in hand.

Now I’ve tried my best to do my duty and fulfil my responsibilities as top dog (well, only dog, but still…). I really have. I have conscientiously brought the ball for her and invited her to play fetch, but no. She wouldn’t even chase me round the table like she usually does. She’s just stroked me and said she was sorry. She threw the ball a bit, of course, but I could tell her heart wasn’t in the game. Not even when I did my best acting for her and looked so miserable.

I’ve unstuffed the fish a few times so she would get some exercise at least, picking the stuff up again.

I would have done my job as food disposal unit too, with the utmost pleasure. But there hasn’t been any. All weekend. Don’t get me wrong, she has fed me my own food, but that is far less interesting that the stuff I can generally con her…sorry, convince her… into sharing with me. She hasn’t even had coffee. Though she won’t let me have that, says I’m ‘hyper’ enough as it is, whatever that means. It must be a compliment, though, ‘cause she laughs when she says it.

I have got her beautifully trained with the coffee too. All I have to do is sit, looking thin and small, lick my lips and look at my bowl and she gives me some of her milk. It works every time.  In the end I was obliged to liberate the last morsel of cheese. Well if she wasn’t eating, it would only go to waste… and we can’t have that!

I can only assume there is a reason for it.

I’ve asked and asked for stuff this weekend, and she’s turned away, shaking her head. I suppose if I could read the letters on the table I might know what was going on, but she won’t let me up there, though I did manage it for a moment when one of my boys came to play. But I know there is something, this ‘bigger picture’ thing she keeps talking about. Maybe if I could see it I’d understand why now is not a time for fun and games and treats.

I suppose there are times when things just don’t go right. Maybe we don’t understand all the ‘why’s and just have to trust and wait with love.

One thing I do know though, she’s looking awfully tired. She’s put the fluffy blanket on the sofa. Wonder if she’ll come and snuggle with me for a bit? I may not understand what’s going on, but I know I can give her a cuddle and lay my head on her feet. And she’ll bury her hands in my fur and I’ll feel her loving me too.

And that’s all it takes to make everything right.

Seems like mum needs to rest, maybe some extra pup snuggles and tea might help.
