Monday has rainclouds and Saturday has rainbows.

This may sound like Orphan Annie at her cloyingly sentimental worst, but it is in fact merely a description of my socks. I have seven pairs, all identically black except for the different days of the week and the accompanying symbol shown on the side. Unfortunately, as is well known, sock partners prefer to take their vacations separately. Sometimes there is simply no choice but to match Friday and, say, Tuesday and hope that the time difference between my ankles doesn’t create dangerous anomalies. I’d hate to come home from a long walk and find one foot has aged twenty years more than the other.

I must admit, when it comes to what I wear on my feet, I cling to convention. There may be no law against odd socks, no legal sanction, no footwear inspectors making their way up the aisle of my commuter train every morning to issue spot fines, but frankly, I prefer my socks to match. If one is red, I don’t want the other to be blue. If one is long, I’d rather the other is not short.

    That was a beautiful post.
On a more mundane level I read somewhere (probably FB) that every disappearing sock comes back as odd Tupperware lids.

  3. Somewhere there exists a planet of odd socks. Someday I’d like to visit there and bring so many of my friends who are… well… odd socks. But they do add color to my life!
