I knew they were up to something… all those missing notifications and strange occurrences were nothing to do with Halloween at all. They were happily engineering … an update.
So the new, all singing, all dancing WordPress editor has now been retroactively demoted to an ‘interim editor’ and the ‘real’ one launched quietly. Which seems rather as if somebody finally realised how unpopular the thing had been but didn’t want to say, ‘we got it wrong.’
They have, it seems, removed the beep bloody boop feature.
As you will note from the italics above, they have also removed the spell-check facility, which seems eminently sensible… who needs a spell check to pick up that smattering of typos and errors after all? It has been proven scientifically that we will read the right word as long as all the letters are there, regardless of what order they are in, as long as the first and last are right…
It will also automatically save your drafts as you go. A nice enough feature for those of us whose computers occasionally , nay frequently crash through overwork or retreat into unresponsiveness when things go beep beep boop in the night…
Is it workable? Yes. Much faster than the old new editor. Do I like it? Not really. I use a PC and prefer the original. With the spell checker… And I’ll stick with that as long as it is available. It gives a better and more defined workspace and there is less glare with the grey borders.
On the other hand, the new-new editor looks far more user friendly for posting from a mobile device.
Meanwhile, I notice that mobile notifications no longer show comments… you have to manually go into comments to see them and I only hope that works more efficiently than the notifications on the desktop that fails to let you know about half the comments…
Even so, you can’t beat WordPress as a platform for blogging.

I posted something this morning on my Goldfish blog and it still went beep bloody boop!

They have warned there might be a lurking booper…

I’ve obviously got it 🙂
I wasn’t fishing for a follow when I mentioned the Goldfish but thank you for signing up to do so.

I thought I already had, mary… unless that was one of the ‘lost’ accounts last time the powers that be decided I’d stop getting any notifications and unfollow everybody…

I still use the original editor. Somebody once had a post on how to set it up. All of those issues I had last week? They happened when I was forced to use the bleep blop bloop interim editor. Oops, I meant to hit post and accidentally unfollowed you! So if you see me as a new follower, that’s why….

I’m a stubborn reactionary too where the editor is concerned (and posted about how to hang on to it a while back!). I never use the other thing if I can help it!

Ah, I must gotten the work around to use the old editor from you. I just like it better.

So do I. Much better!

Sue, this is all very interesting as I posted from my phone with ease today. I couldn’t understand how I’d suddenly become so adept. Now, I get it!!!

Well that’s encouraging to know, Jean 🙂

I do like the automatic save because I sometimes forget to do that. Also, my latest haiku for Ron was published instantly with no hours of waiting. Don’t know if that is a new feature or just coincidence.

I’ve never had to wait for an article to be published, but I do use the PC rather than a mobile device.

I never EVER could use the ‘new’ editor. I have always used the old one. That “beep bloody boop” thing would have caused me to stop blogging all together if I hadn’t of been told how to not have to use it. I do love this platform. But they don’t listen to users very well.

That last is probably my biggest gripe with WordPress.

WordPress does have a lot of problems. I haven’t tried this new new editor, but I’m sure I’ll see it soon enough. I use the WordPress app for most of my posts. The WordPress app has a lot of problems on my iPad, every update causes something to go goofy.
Thanks for alerting me to this new new editor.

It does look better, Colin… hopefully it works better too!

I tend to use the WP app on iPad and android phone for most posting, and it isn’t any different, however I was receiving all notifications twice for a while!
I shall check out the new editor via my PC and explore the changes soon!

I use android on the phone, and there have been changes there… nothing glaring, but I’ll be interested to see how well it works. The PC is sticking with the original while it can 🙂

Does that mean I will no longer have to do battle when a word I use is not in their dictionary?

Temporarily at least 🙂

A long time ago someone advised me to do all posts (except re-blogs) in my word processor, select the font and layout I like, then copy and paste it into the WP draft page (the old one) – saved me loads of annoyances that way.
However, the images still need to be inserted using the WP post admin, plus the highlighting of embedded links.

I always do that anyway, though my PC’s dictionary has so many strange words in it these days the oddest things get past the spell-check… 🙂 I’ve never managed to get it to copy over fonts and layout though.

When I say layout, I mean centralising some of the text, WP doesn’t ape with image inserts except when I use tables

I do like WordPress, even though it took me ages to learn how to use it. Now I can, I feel very ‘techno’ and clever. I had the feeling something was up, as a huge chunk of my data went for a walk, taking nearly a hundred of my followers with it…
Whatever happened to ‘if it aint broke’…?

I don’t think they have got the hang of that last bit up in ‘happiness land’… 😉
I’ve tried most of the other platforms and this is by far the best in my opinion.

I’ve tended to go back to the original if I can. On android and ipad too. Much easier for a bear of little brain….

It’s just a far more sensible layout… and everything else on the admin panels still available too…

Like you, I much, much prefer to use my desktop to write and publish any posts. Thanks for the lowdown on the new Editor feature. I have an email from WordPress all about it, but you’ve convinced me to leave it alone for as long as possible. Thanks, Sue.

It doesn’t seem half bad, Hugh, but I’ll be sticking wit the old one myself.

It is a great platform, I agree. Though I have stuck to using the old dashboard format for posts as well – the beep boop one drove me crazy! I may try the new one and see how it goes…

I prefer the original editor also. I have yet to read someone commenting that they prefer the new one. I suppose there are some out there who do. I’m happy also they got rid of the “boop.” That always seemed so silly to me. Maybe kids think it’s cute. Good piece, Sue 🙂 — Suzanne

‘Cute’ was not the word that ever came to my mind, I have to say… and you are right. I haven’t heard anyone say they like the new version better than the old yet either.
