Who said you needed to have fireworks for Halloween? Hmm? I know there is that Bonfire Night thingy coming up… I know ‘cause it gets dark early then they start letting of the whizz-pop-bangs every night… and I guess they are allowed for that. But Halloween? I don’t think so…
It’s bad enough spending Bonfire Night under her chair, and New Year, without starting this malarkey in October… and it’s still going on tonight too!
It’s not that I’m a scaredy-cat or anything. I just don’t like the things. So I hide wait under her chair till they’ve stopped.
Last year, she was rotten and took a picture. This year she has learned her lesson and draped a big, black blanket over the chair so it is like a tent underneath. That’s much more dignified. And I’m handy in case she needs me… you never know, she might get scared and need to stroke my ears or something, just to reassure her.
So, I’m okay… but I know a lot of dogs who aren’t, this time of year. I can’t speak for cats, they don’t let me get close enough to find out… but I would imagine it must be the same for them. And rabbits and stuff. So in the interests of inter-species relations, I’d like to suggest you follow the advice of the RSPCA (even if she does say that it is Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals… not Ani. I keep telling her otherwise. Especially when she’s stingy with the cheese…).
If there will be fireworks near you, just give the furries a thought.
Me, I’ll be under the chair in my tent if you need me…
Much love, Ani xxx
Poor thing! I know, these fireworks… Unnecessary until 5th November… And (sorry) whenever Diwali is, if you live anywhere with Indians around! I think it’s 11th November this year.
There was a family having a Halloween party on our street, and they thought 11.30pm would be a good time to set off one of those massive ones that whizz pops 50 odd times! Great!

Diwali is a proper festival .. So that’s fine… But not midnight on Halloween…. X

So true Ani, my two fluff-monsters (dogs) hate them and seek out comfort under the coffee table. Once a year should be enough (maybe New Years’ at a push but that seems to be a relatively new thing too)!

some fireworks are so noisy, and so much more so for our furry friends. I think the worst thing you can do, is leave them alone on the worst nights, for they can bear almost anything if you are with them.

I don’t know when fireworks at Halloween started – seems bizarre when only a few nights later is the accepted time for them. You stay snuggled close to Sue, Ani, when the whizz bang pops begin. She’ll appreciate you looking out for her!

What is this obsession with fireworks for any event? They used to be so special when only available once or twice a year, now? Yawn. We are determined to destroy all magic. (and people wonder why kids are all depressed – what do they have to look forward to?)
The German firmly agrees with this Ani. She automatically curls up by the bathtub at the first pop to wait it out.

One a year or ‘mega’ celebrations… and everyone got involved… I seldom bother looking these days unless there is a real event.

A worthy post.
Maggie likes to hide behind one of us, or snuggle in real close. We cover her with a blanket or one of our jumpers, close all the curtains and black out the windows, and have a small light on at her eye level. If she wants to go into the bathroom, we let her, but carry on a normal. We find putting a noisy DVD on also helps as she’s familiar with the sound which detracts from the whizz bangs and pops. We’re not sure yet whether living on a boat helps or not!

Ani didn’t mind at all for the first couple of years. Something must have made her change her mind, but as long as she is under my chair she seems to feels safe.

Ani is so very much like Maggie, who also didn’t seem too bothered when a young puppy. The thing is, the fireworks are just so loud these days, it affects my eardrums, so heaven only knows what it’s like for a dog. Glad Ani feel safe under your chair.

Funny thing, but our Sadie is 5 now and she always “watched” fireworks with us, but this summer she got spooked at the finale and so we’ll be leaving her home in her cozy crate next year. She won’t hear much of it from home, since we can’t hear a thing.
We lived on a military base, very loud, cannons daily, ammunition noises frequently — maybe she’s not used to the loud booms anymore. Not too sure. Poor thing.

Poor girl. Ani used to watch and challenge them… nowadays she’s none too sure either. She’s nearly the same age as Sadie too.

It’s deer hunting season here and I’m having trouble figuring out which are fireworks … and which are rifle shots. Garry said yesterday’s noise were NOT gunshots and I suppose he would know. The dogs weren’t scare. I was scared. Where do I hide?

Fireworks are illegal here. I walked out to the beach and into a group of big men who were shooting off fireworks. I asked them to stop since their cannon noises were scaring my pets. Guess what? They stopped. I guess they felt I was insane, so they had better cut it out. I thanked them and walked back home.

Hi Ani: I know just how you feel! We don’t have fireworks around my – er,our – house, but we do have lots of thunderstorms here in NC, Thunder and lightening make me rattled, er, anxious. My humans bought me a coat and they put it on me during the storms. It fits really nicely and is very warm, and it makes me happy, er, less anxious. They also cover my crate with a blanket when they go to bed. I think you might like the coat – it comes in a lovely blue and also red. I’ll have me human send your human the link to the site, if you’d be willing to try it.
Your friend, Angel

Hi Angel,
We’ve seen those coats and though they look like a really good idea, after she tried to get me into one in winter…to keep me warm and dry in all that snow… we decided she’d need to grow more arms before we tried again. She doesn’t seem to have done so yet…

If the country is going to adopt the American Halloween festivities instead of the old Penny for the Guy of Nov 5th then maybe the Bonfire Night should stop. Either that or make fireworks legal only for registered Bonfire/Firework displays. I’m not a party pooper but I’m fed up of fireworks every night from last Friday to Nov 5th and maybe beyond.
No fireworks for New Year except at the turn of a Century maybe.. I remember when they were sold just once a year for a week or so, now they seem to be on sale all the time.

I’m beginning to sympathise with that view, I have to say, David. Apart from anything else, it takes the magic out of the displays for the children.

I don’t like them fireworks either Ani. My dad has bought me a comfort jacket this year. The lady in the shop said it was 100% guaranteed to work. That pleased my dad as he thinks he can return it anyway and get his money back. I don’t like wearing it but I guess I’ll give it another try. My dad said he is going to build me a tent like in this post your put together. We only had one trick or treater call on Halloween and she was dressed as a cat! Well, you can imagine my reaction to that!
Keep safe.
Lots of barks and waggly tails

Be well, Ani. I agree about the disturbing preponderance of explosives startling one in a suburban neighborhood. Even knowing an appropriate holiday is around the corner, the fact that people think setting off what sounds like an M-80 in a housing area that might have babies, or likely pets, is just inconsiderate. I think there should be designated ‘blowing up sh… stuff’ area where people can gather together and count how many fingers they have lost to their preferred entertainment. (Six or less digits and you are a winner!)

Thanks, Kirizar, I regret the passing of the small celebrations where the whole street joined in. The fireworks were smaller then too on the whole and designated area would make much more sense.
