Guest poet

A young lady approached me to ask if I accept guest posts. I hadn’t come across her work before, but had stumbled across one of her poems, which I very much liked.

Pretty Ugly

My shallow eyes are beads of honor.
My darkened skin is the epitome of color.
My misshapen feet are the carriers of wonders.
My rounded head is a home of ponders.
My thick lips bring forth wisdom.
My rough hands will build kingdoms.
My kinky hair is crowning glory.
My pretty ugly is a God-told story.

The young lady is Tokoni Uti. She writes about herself:

b4264533f54d8a8870a93f86fa1d338d.jpegI grew up in Lagos, Nigeria and developed an interest in literature from an early age. I began writing when I was 10. I attended the International School of the University of Lagos and I’m  currently at Bowen University, Nigeria. I am a Novelist and poet and have  previously written poetry for the Huffington Post, Portsmouth Daily Times, Space Bar magazine, S magazine, Girslife.com, San Diego Free Press, Collective Lifestyle Media, Op-ed News, The Brooklyn Reader and Los Angeles Free Press.

Allegiance

We may live as travelling soldiers in the heat of day.
Or we can stay at safe harbour devoid of play.
It is time to pledge unwavering loyalty.
To place our tribute at the feet of personal royalty.
I’ve found hope in the opposing forces.
Heaven help us as we run our courses.
Pick your side and show no resistance.
Offer yourself as show of allegiance.

Tokoni Uti writes at Beautiful Insanity.
