The bird feeder at my son’s home is a veritable maelstrom of activity these days with whole flocks of young starlings vying for position and supremacy. We watch them every morning before my son gets out of bed, and occasionally I remember to have the camera to hand.
Nick, of course, sets up the tripod and takes fabulous pictures. I tend to snap away through the glass of the window, which may not make for the clearest of shots, but it has allowed me to capture the action on occasions. Nick attempts to teach me the best use of the settings on the camera, determined to make me use the features at my fingertips.
The young starlings squabble amongst themselves, but seem to work in a concerted manner when a pigeon, sparrow or other intruder arrives and we have watched them sitting on the pigeon repeatedly until it flies off, and chasing away the young robin, the thrushes and the sparrows.
The jackdaw, though, tends to have the place to itself for some reason. This morning it arrived late, after the starlings had finished off the feeder full of fat balls, and sat waiting until I took out breakfast. I was quite happy with the snaps I had taken, capturing the birds in action, even through the window glass…. till my son showed me his latest photo… You really can go right off people…

wonderful pictures! I always think in terms of animal totems when I see pictures such as this. I did not know you wrote so many books. I am going to check them out.

Than you! The birds have a special place in the books, Kimberly. Totem seems too small a word for the dance they led us through the adventures that led us to write the Initiate series!

Fantastic pictures, but that first bird looks downright nasty… 🙂

Excellent photos, Sue. I also have to work on learning more about my camera’s settings. 😉

I took 45 photos of the sandhill crane and chick, but that’s only because I wanted to make sure I got the shot I was looking for – all 3 in a semi-close-up. 😉
