The reluctant shopper

nick north days 219

I don’t want to go to Tesco when it’s full of Christmas shoppers

With their trollies full of goodies and the manic bargain hoppers,

‘Cause I only want the dog food and a meal or two for me…

Not a thousand Christmas presents and another tinsel tree.

I’d go down after midnight but the shelves will all be bare

As if several flights of locusts had called in for dinner there;

So I’ll gird the loins and think about steel toecaps in the shoes…

Avoiding all the aisles that stock the mincemeat and the booze.

I’m not an Ebeneezer Scrooge , I love the season dearly…

But watching all the madness tries my patience quite severely.

But there are some precautions that I really ought to take…

I’ll make mince pies and sausage rolls and decorate the cake.

‘Cause even if on Christmas morn there’s just the dog and me,

There’s still the boys to come around and presents on the tree.

There’s Christmas cards upon the shelf from those whom I hold dear

That make me smile because I know at least their thoughts are here.

For deeper still this is a time for hearts  to sing with joy,

And celebrate the story of a single baby boy,

Then in the velvet darkness as we raise our eyes above,

We’ll see the starlit pathway as a symbol of His Love.

I don’t want to go to Tesco either or any of the others. They were all heaving yesterday and all I wanted was a bottle of water! The woman’s face at customer services told a story when I asked to pay there rather than queue for and hour and a half!!! Crazy world! Anyway, happy happy Christmas to you and yours 🙂

I feel it! A very pleasant poem. Well balanced and rhythmic. A nice quiet Christmas at home is often the best kind of Christmas. Peace 🙂

I am sure people think that the world will run out of food over Christmas! It’s only 2 days.
    Loved the poem. 🙂
