There were no flowers and chocolates this morning,
I had something better instead
For my sons, with true Mother’s Day kindness
Decided that I should be fed.
Nick had me for lunch down at his place,
And frankly, between me and you,
A five star hotel wouldn’t beat it
Once you saw what was on the menu.
I arrived freezing cold from the weather,
It has snowed here and hasn’t been nice
And what with the wind chill and Reynaud’s
My hands were much colder than ice.
He wasn’t quite dressed when I got there,
Still shirtless and nicely warmed through…
Till my hands touched his back as he hugged me,
And he yelped, “ I did not think that through!”
There was salmon with pilau and mushrooms,
Teriyaki and chocolate cheesecake
By the time I had finished my luncheon
I was full and beginning to ache.
I went home and collapsed on the sofa,
For a much needed post luncheon nap
Wrapped up in a big furry blanket
With a small furry dog on my lap.
I needed to digest quite quickly,
It was already mid afternoon
I was due next with Alex and Laura
And I felt like a bursting balloon.
There was soup and fresh rolls there for starters
Then pork braised in fresh apple sauce
Washed down with a wine made from cherries
And I knew there would be a third course.
And there was, and the thing was delicious,
All fresh cream and lemons and zest,
So I manfully waded right in there
Determined to finish the rest.
‘Course, by now I feel full fit to bursting
And possibly look a bit pale,
With the internal plumbing complaining
And feeling much like a beached whale.
So I waddled back home in the darkness
And armed with antacids and tea,
I sit here and let it all settle
And just have an hour for me.
You can keep all the roses and chocolates,
And all of those Mother’s day joys,
‘Cause today I had something quite special,
Today I was fed by my boys.
They took time with the planning and prepping,
And advice from the girls by their side,
Filled my plate with delightful affection,
And my heart with a motherly pride.
Thank you, my sons.
With love,
Mum xxx

That sounds like an amazing Mother’s Day, especially all that food. Teriyaki and chocolate cheesecake sounds interesting.

Thank you, Ken. As a Yorkshire woman food is closely entwined with expressions of emotion, care and hospitality.. I was brought up to feed people 🙂 It is lovely to see that reflected in my sons.
