I knew she would mislay him again… she always does when he takes the black leathery thing out to the car. It had all been going so well too… a couple of days playing with Gooch and co… then home to tennis balls, cheese and pâté… what more could a dog want? But she can’t be trusted to bring my visitors back.
Perhaps I need to give her a few pointers… a bit more training as a retriever in the eternal game of fetch…
Not that it is all roses, of course… they barely stop talking long enough to throw the ball most of the time and I keep having to remind them. I’m doing my best to make noises they understand … but two-legses have such a weird set of noises… For a dog it is a bit undignified.
Mind you, I’m not sure they understand the concept of dignity… my lips are sealed… but frankly the two of them are both as bad. He mentioned how much I looked like Anubis in profile as I was sitting on the back of the sofa. And that’s all very well… perfectly acceptable in fact and I take it as a compliment… but there was no need to get the camera and hold up my ears while she snapped away. I ask you… If a girl’s ears were meant to stand on end they would. Without any help.
As if that wasn’t enough they started on The Tail… my feathering may look like a feather, but you know, it is fur… more like a ferret than, say, an owl for instance…
Speaking of owls, there is one outside hooting… and I can’t see it. I sat in the doorway watching for it till she made me come in. She, not being furry enough of course, seems to disapprove of frosty nights. Don’t mind ‘em, myself…
Owls though, I mind. You can hear ‘em but you can never see them to chase ‘em. And, being a bird-dog, I am supposed to. Sparrows are all very well, and I can chase them any time, but owls like to hide and you don’t hear them coming.
She says I don’t need to chase them, but of course, I do. There is a hierarchy to nature… We all have our role and our place within it, and we are all equally important. Even cats, much as I hate to admit it… even they share in the one life of the world.
Time for a run though… and there may be early pheasants…
Catch you later,
Much love,
Ani xxx

Take heap lots of training, our Own Gods, don’t they Ani? Fink mine’s a bit dense ‘actually. She got very small brain, and don’t see happies of rolling in smelly dead pheasant – silly moo, she be. Anyway, your lot sounds justasbad ‘f’ not worser. What they think we are, eh? Performing toys? Lotsa licks and stuff, Jumbs. xxx

Hey Jumble!
How can they not get the whole smelly thing? I mean.. they squirt sneezy stuff in every nook and cranny to cover up their smells… why can’t we have a good roll? Give ’em their due, though… they do share the cheese at least…;)The big eyed hungry stare always gets ’em 😉
Much love,

Hey, Ani, nice to hear from you! You have a nice life, I must say, despite the frustrations with the two leggeds that never understand us. We have owls here, too, and sometimes all that hooting drives me nuts. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your two legged companion!

Hey Angel, nice to meet you 🙂 She’s not too bad, to be fair.. I have her pretty much trained… well, as much as you can ever train a female two-legs anyway…
Ruddy owl was at it half the night. One of these days I’ll manage to have words with it about that…. 😉

So true. Our pets keep us anchored in that world, don’t they? Love the post.

Yes, they do..and remind us we may not be so far separate from the natural world as we might like to think.
