Its cream cheese and crackers for me and the dog,
While I’m more the epicure… she’s just a hog..
I nibble quite delicately, don’t you know,
She swallows the ruddy things all in one go.
While I take my time with the texture and flavour,
Enjoying the moment as something to savour,
She’s sitting there watching as if it’s a crime
That I am not sharing enough of the time.
She knows very well that although she’s had dinner
Those puppy-dog eyes mean she’s onto a winner…
If I don’t give in to the piteous whine
She stares with a look that says plainly, ‘It’s mine.’’
She’s partial to emmenthal, cheddar and brie…
(and anything else on my plate she can see!)
It’s all very well but my diet is meagre
And gets even less with a canine so eager
To filch every possible crumb from my plate….
Pretending somehow that its weeks’ since she ate.
It’s serious stuff this, ‘cause I’m getting thinner
Not only because she is sharing my dinner,
Expending more calories than I am eating
(Though that might improve now the guy fixed the heating)
Does she share her dinner with me? Not at all…
Just laughs and insistently fetches the ball.
Perhaps I should patent this new canine diet
Instead of just sitting here keeping it quiet
‘Cause in our society few things seem bigger
Than getting a handle on keeping your figure.
And people spend thousands on image and taste…
When it’s simple… a small dog is good for your waist.

Wonderful photos! What a beauty she is.

Well- my cat is great company, doesn’t bark, and doesn’t care for people food…. I’m never called upon to share my cheese and crackers 😉 Your dog has the best “devil eyes” ever though.

Wasn’t that a lucky shot? I couldn’t have done that on purpose if I’d tried 😉

Sue, what a delightful read! Your lovely dog is good for the waistline, and your poem is great for the heart. It always amazes me how hungry my dog looks, even after his dinner, when he sees/ smells the cheese.
