Elephant hawk moth caterpillar! Wow so cool. Great picture. They live on willow herb so if this is your garden Sue have look on any (next summer) if you have some nearby. The adult moths are beautiful. And the caterpillar is why it gets its name because it can extend its proboscis like a trunk…

I had one of the moths try and immolate itself on the light last year… I managed to rescue it, thankfully, and got some wonderful pictures before it recovered and flew off.

we had a mercury vapour moth trap in the garden when I was a child – dad was a fanatical lepidopterist – and going out in the morning to see what had flown in was a real guilty pleasure We’d then let them go and wonder who might return the next night.
