A picture of despair

The table that was flower decked and centre of attention

Now piled with paper has become a studio extension.

It’s covered with a rainbow layer of pretty pastel dust…

The passage of a nice damp cloth will soon become a must.

Discarded watercolours hide in never ending piles

Of illustrated magazines and useless reference files.

The pencil sharpener’s buried somewhere underneath the mound,

My favourite putty rubber has been eaten by the hound.

The inks have stained my fingers and acrylics just won’t do it

And every paintbrush that I drop the dog kidnaps to chew it.

With every medium I’ve tried to gain a little speed

That’s gentle on my aching hands and meets my deadline’s need.

I’m nicely multi-coloured here, caught in creative toils.

I’’ll have to bring the easel down and start again with oils.

This is a great poem and I love the dogs eating the supplies. I’m not sure why it’s title a picture of despair though.

  2. I like this, the frustrations of an artist! I do a bit of art now and then, so I know the feeling! 😀

  5. Wonderful poem, Sue! ‘eaten by the hound’ made me giggle! I cannot believe what my pooch will try to eat. They definitely need to be treated as toddlers who put everything in their mouths… The second picture is so sweet! I’m getting watercolor pencils for my birthday and I feel like a kid getting new crayons. My sketches need some color. 🙂

It was the innocent expression and the clunk of wood on teeth that got me.. as if she was trying to eat hard candy in class without being seen… no, I didn’t need all the stretchers…. *chuckles*
