Remains of the day

A big box of chocolates sits on my desk,

We had eaten enough that they’d last…

So on Boxing Day, in a decadent move,

I could use them for breaking my fast.

There’ll be turkey sandwiches, cake and mince pies

And the leftover trifle for tea,

The last sausage roll and a sliver of cheese

Will be plenty for small dog and me.

The small dog and I overate just a bit,

What with Yorkshires and roasties and stuff,

But there are leftovers to finish today

And there will be more than enough.

It was cooked to perfection, that seasonal feast,

Bringing memories back with each taste…

But memories linger, and with every bite,

They are lingering now on my waist.

That big box of chocolates will soon be no more

And the trifle no more than a ghost…

So after today, as our waistlines dictate,

We’ll be dining on nothing but toast.

I think we managed to cook pretty well for just the four of us. Just one container of leftovers! And Lil Man wants those in a sandwich!
But its the naughty treats that are still everywhere!!

  7. We have the same, Sue. A mountain of left overs including the last of a delicious black forest trifle.

We finished all the Yorkshire! But plenty of treats and sandwich makings, and the girls are doing the cookies tomorrow. That diet will need to wait. (K)

  9. Love the poem Sue. My sentiments exactly with the waist. Maggie would have had her own dinner and titbits besides. I can see you and Ani, content and full, snoozing in front of the TV. Wonderful.

  11. We did a buffet style meal, and there were enough leftovers that all of us have some for today, and some of us will have a few bits to nibble on over the next few days. We won’t talk about how many extra treats were involved. 😉

I did vaguely think about hiding some of the chocolates but… that’s not really in the spirit of things, is it? So, we’ll eat them and not have any more for a long, long time.

Lovely and true poem, Sue. My husband has removed the box of chocolates so we’re not tempted. But in a moment I’ll be going to heat up the leftovers!
