Published! ~ Jane Dougherty

Jane Dougherty Writes

Today’s the day, my mum’s birthday and publication day for my first chapbook of poetry! I never thought I’d do it, but never say never. Having received enough rejections from literary agents for several lifetimes, it would have seemed like pure masochism to submit my poems to a publisher. We’re only constructed to take so much punishment. So, I did it myself. Quick, simple and completely painless. Except for the cover which is always a pain.

The poems are new but the themes are old. The usual, but mainly about water, what it says on the tin. Here’s what it looks like

Congratulations! You are a good writer and I hope your book sells well.

Poetry is hard to get published (my son uses Finishing Line Press). That’s all I know about publishing poetry, which is to say I’m almost clueless. 🙂

  3. Thank you! It is hard to be published by a poetry press because they want (need) you to have publishing credentials. They don’t make much money and they want poets they know won’t be an utter flop. You have to ratchet up enough publications in good quality magazines before you can even submit.

I’d rather do it myself than go through something like Finishing Line that charges the poet money. Amazon do it for nothing and I like the look of the finished product. Tell your son to look at kdp publishing. It’s dead easy and it’s free 🙂
