In sleepless silence
night mourns the dreaming
lost to a fallen star.
Shadows chase the ghosts of morning,
ever seeking to consume them,
jealous of their light.
Paper wings flutter
unheeded to the floor
in flightless death.
The wakeful poet dips his pen
in cold coffee
beside the empty bed
and yearns for dawn.

Not being able to sleep is difficult, Sue, and I know it is something you suffer from at the best of times. My mother and husband have the same problem. Fortunately, this is one problem I’ve never had to date.

Just at present, it is doubly frustrating as both me and the morphine want me to sleep, but discomfort is stopping me.

This is a wonderful poem. It’s melancholy and dark with words of longing, but very evocative. Poignant to, at times. Really really good.

Shouldn’t that be ‘the wakeful poet dips her pen’ ?
It’s a powerful image, but I’m guessing you’d rather sleep that be awake to write about it.

I’m hoping this is just the morphine and steroids and stuff. Chemo will alter it all again apparently. Then we’ll have to wait and see… I really miss a decent coffee…

I have never had any trouble sleeping, but this year I have woken before dawn most days. My brain seems to think I need more time to worry about everything. I am getting through so much work though!

A beautiful and moving poem, Sue. The loss of taste is not good. It’s one of our best senses.

Those last hours of a sleepless night are the hardest.
I know the uses and reasons for steroids but they do awful things to the body and mind. I’m hoping your taste will return soon–I too would really miss the flavor and aroma of of coffee. (K)

Insomnia has two sides, 1) all you want is to sleep deeply and 2) the quiet of night is such a fertile time for creativity. We like both!
Lately, I’ve been listening to a CD of ocean surf and timing my in and out breaths with ebb and breaking of the waves. Relaxes surprisingly well and sleep arrives faster than other things I’ve tried. Do you have such CDs there or shall I send you one? Might be worth a try.
Hope you find some rest soon! ❤

I do love those night hours, usually. I think it is only the tug of war between the need for sleep, the pain and the meds that is making it a problem at the moment. ❤
