Dear Don: Omar…

Dear Don,
Ah, the quotation is from the Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám. There is much wisdom in those pages.

“Oh, Thou, who didst with pitfall and with gin
Beset the Road I was to wander in,
Thou wilt not with Predestined Evil round
Enmesh, and then impute my Fall to Sin!”

Old Omar knew a thing or two. An interesting chap… you might think he is little but the wine sodden tentmaker at first reading, but he was a polymath and amongst his accomplishments reorganised the calendar along solar lines, making the Jalali calendar far more accurate than the Gregorian.

Omar_Khayyam_1So… if Omar says Men are made of ‘baser earth’, I for one am inclined to believe him. Perhaps it is the mirror effect again? It does rather depend on where you are standing as to which way is up. Perhaps Men do ‘come from the Starry Heavens, and Women from the Stony Earth…’… but perhaps the stars of Womankind are mirrored in the night dark seas… Stella Maris.

The Death=Gnosis/Initiation thing is fairly standard really… We know that initiation is not conferred by human hand, but is a contract between Man and the Divine. To become and Initiate is to die to the lower self and enter a higher state of Being; with such moments may come Gnosis. “And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live.” We know this is often played out symbolically in formal initiatory rites, mirroring on the earthly plane what is happening on the more subtle levels and in doing so, bringing the inner into consciousness. So when Adam and Eve are cast out of Eden lest ‘they become as the Angels,’ as it says in the Qu’ran, or ‘they become one of us’, so the Lord God says in the Bible … well, it sounds like divine Union to me. Which has to be the ultimate Initiation…

Mind you, I would still like to know who the ‘us’ is in that line from the Bible… it sort of implies there is more than One… perhaps that relates to the ‘many mansions’ idea. The One that is Many… yet is still but One. And maybe if we could get that as a species, we might be able to stop fighting so damned much…
