La belle France. Yet even the most beautiful of gardens have both thorns and weeds. The group Eurocultures invited me to visit Camp Rivesaltes otherwise known as Camp Joffre where we would visit a memorial to some of its darker past. Sue, thank you, As you can imagine, seeing was difficult and hard to reconcile with the beautiful country I love. But there is a duty to remember and try to prevent it from happening again. Léa

I know, Léa, and agree. I too love France, having lived there for many years, but like all countries, there are reminders of a past we cannot afford to forget. I lived in both Paris and Vichy… both of which bear their own scars, not all of them visible.
Have you ever had the chance to visit Oradour not far from Limoges, it is a place that never leaves your memory.

No. I am not familiar with Oradour but it is to be researched and put on the list. My best friend is coming from California late next month, perhaps I can find something to entice her there?
I’ve been fortunate to visit some amazing places but since coming to France, I have to literally drag myself anywhere else…
The scars I witnessed in Vietnam are forever burned into my being.

Oradour is harrowing. You walk in the footsteps of tragedy. But it is one of those places that need to be remembered.

Perhaps a bit like hiking up into one of the ancient chateaus where the Cathars were slaughtered during the inquisition…

Yes… I imagine it must be, though that is something I have yet to do. Some of the Templar holdings in France have the same feel.

How exciting for us. As we know, stones have stories to share, if we are listening…

Without a doubt. 🙂 Perhaps you are also listening to the songs of the trees. They are singing loud and clear across the river from me and I must go and join them… 😉

It certainly does. It is a shame that more people don’t take the time to listen… 🙂
