“We can take the car out in the morning,”
Said my son, “I’ll get up and we’ll go.”
Nothing loath, I agreed, we could test it
“I am sure there’s somewhere that you know…”
I’d be glad of a run in the motor,
I’m learning to trust it, you see,
And my son, in a generous moment,
Had left destinations to me.
I could, if we set off quite early,
Head out, perhaps, do some research…
And while putting the car through its paces
Sneak in the odd hillfort or church.
The curtains are closed when I get there,
He’s still in the land of the dead,
So I bang about making his coffee
And soon get him moving instead.
I had a good day with the camera,
We called at a good place or three,
And the car, earning trust by the minute,
Is proving its value to me.
We took it up hills and through valleys,
Down lanes where the trees brush the sides,
On tracks where the surface is rutted
It is proving the smoothest of rides.
It’s late afternoon when we’re finished
And tea-time before I get home.
I let out the dog, turn the heat on…
And find I must get on the phone.
The gas heating’s died and stopped working…
I call up the helpline tout de suite
They promise they’ll come out and sort it,
I’m glad, ’cause I’m freezing my feet…
I cuddle a warm dog for comfort,
With naught else to take off the chill.
The phone says I’m talking to China…
I hope not, I’m paying the bill!
By the time that they’ve been out and fixed it,
I’m tired and aching with cold,
The dog, in her fur coat, is laughing,
‘That’s one sign you’re just getting old…’
Too late to be processing photos,
Impatient to snuggle in bed…
Too weary to write of adventures,
I’ll make my excuses instead.
A very nice way to chronicle your day’s adventures.

Hope the heat is back on. Glad to hear the new wheels are running smoothly. How’s Frank the cat, BTW? I rather liked him 😉

I loved the account of the test drive and recognise the part where the sun is still in bed.I hope you had fun , typical though that that’s the day the heating broke. I hope youare safe and warm now ❤
