Today, all being well, I will be on Holy Island… Lindisfarne… for the last day of the Silent Eye’s autumn workshop. It is a place I love and have been lucky enough to visit many times now… but it can never be enough.
That is one of the joys of these workshops… that we not only get to visit wonderful places ourselves…and spend time researching them too… but that we get to share them with others, exploring the sites and their histories, their legends, myths and folklore… and making them a part of a theme that runs through the weekend. These themes explore spiritual concepts, often in unusual ways, and because we do not stand as teachers in front of our students, but share the journey, listening, looking and learning ourselves, we learn as much as we share.
Beyond the land-based workshops that take us to such varied sites, there are the April workshops. Slightly more formal, but just as much fun, these can take us anywhere and any-when that the imagination can conceive. Spirituality is serious stuff. The teachings that are incorporated into these weekends are also serious and can help create a better understanding of who we are, why we are here and what we might want to do with that knowledge… but that does not mean we cannot have fun exploring such weighty concepts. On the contrary, there is no better place than the temple for laughter and joy is a gift of the gods.
So, our April workshops have, in the past, taken us high into mystical mountains with a group of travellers and a mysterious Child. Back to the temples of Ancient Egypt. We have landed a spaceship on an unexplored planet, visited the court of King Arthur and gone back to the dawn of time in our own landscape. Next April will see us in ancient Sumeria, with a magical interpretation of the Epic of Gilgamesh that is entirely relevant to our modern society. Such scenarios engage the imagination and open the doors to explore ancient ideas in new ways and contexts.
But before then, we have the great stone circles of the Lake District in December… and the story of this weekend, Castles of the Mind, to share on the Silent Eye’s website…
The Silent Eye School of Consciousness, is a not-for-profit organisation that helps people find explore their spiritual potential with a personally supervised distance learning programme.
Our informal events are held several times every year and are open to all. You do not have to be a member to join us as we wander the rich landscape of Britain, visiting ancient, sacred and intriguing places. We seek out myth and mystery, exploring what the land and its stories can teach us about our own daily lives and our place in the intricate tapestry of human Being.
After each event, we publish an account of the places we have visited and share a little of what we have discussed during the course of the weekend to give a taste of what we do.

I am so glad, even by correspondence, to get to go on these adventures in places so many centuries old, and to learn so much about a country and its environs and peoples who have inhabited it, as well as its folklore and myths, etc. This is soothing like nothing else I know of, and it is better than any doctor at healing anything that might ail us. Life is so short, and travel is expensive, but when we can sit in the comfort of a good chair in our own home and go to a site clear across the world in a matter of minutes, I know there surely are miracles in this old world. Even though sometimes it takes me a bit to get to where I can sit and go on the journeys, it is well worth the wait every single time. Coming to know not only the Directors and Supervisors of our course, as well as the wonderful companions, many who have become the nicest of friends and the most inspirational has been another unexpected gift that just keeps growing. For certain my world is a better place to live. Thank you one and all.
