Summer nights…

With windows wide, I breathe the night,
And watch the shifting web of light,
I see the hunter’s silent wings,
While in the moonlight robin sings.

The night is hot, yet I must sleep,
And so into my bed I creep.
I hit the pillow and I groan…
All I can hear’s a constant drone.

Upstairs have an electric fan
Upon which there should be a ban,
It’s echoing right through the floor…
And I’m not sleepy any more.

I hear it whirring, though it’s late,
I even hear it oscillate.
It’s still a-whirr at half past three,
It’s doing good for them, not me.

What’s wrong with windows open wide?
Why should we from the darkness hide?
Let fresh air in and mozzies out.
That’s what a good night’s sleep’s about.

I’d rather follow my old granny
Than some ‘health and safety’ nanny.
What is it really that we fear
On summer nights when skies are clear?

An overheated, stifled state
Appears to be our chosen fate.
What is it with this weathered nation
So opposed to ventilation?

We have encountered the problem with the fan. Getting them to stand it on a rubber mat sometimes works…

I can imagine how irritating that must be.

  3. I love having the window open. If it was up to me, it would only be closed when the weather is so bad that leaving it open means rain – or snow, or whatever – ends up coming in through it. I mean, I like rain and snow, but even I think they belong outside. Well, apart from that snowball I had in the freezer (until someone threw it away) but that’s different.

I don’t like fans and dislike air conditioning even more!

  5. So sorry that you have to deal with the oscillation sans ventilation, Sue. I’m with you – windows open and fresh air. Clever poem. I hope you get to sleep tonight. 🙂

English houses are built for English winters so are hot in the short summer. South African houses are built for South African summers so we freeze to death in the winter.

You have my sympathies, Sue. Even your head in a pillow sandwich wouldn’t muffle that deep vibration. Let’s hope the heat abates soon! We’re heading into a prolonged stretch of it ourselves. 😦
