Holiday season…

The trouble with going away is the work
That needs doing before you depart,
Between all the jobs and the livestock and sons…
You must take a deep breath and take heart.

‘Cause the freezer needs filling with ready-cooked meals
That you’re cooking from scratch every day,
Because being a carer, you have to step up
And make sure he’s fed while you’re away.

Then his housework needs doing, an extra-good job,
And his laundry and garden as well,
The cat-food needs stocking, the fish food filled up,
… And then clean out the pond pump from hell.

By the time that you’re done, you are already whacked,
But you’re not going to get home just yet,
‘Cause the car needs attention, there’s shopping to do,
So there’s time for stuff you might forget.

You are ladened with bags as you walk in the house
And the dog’s bounding up at the door,
‘Cause she knows you have chicken, her nose never lies,
…So you end in a heap on the floor.

You have sorted the small dog, put shopping away,
And your laundry is hung out to dry,
So you cut the back lawn, quick, before it can rain,
With a weather eye watching the sky.

Then the car will need cleaning, its tyres pumped up,
Check the levels, top them up as well,
Fit the new windscreen wipers, and check all the lights
Then its sorted, far as you can tell.

You still have your own housework, the bed must be changed,
And a great pile of ironing too.
The drain needs unblocking, the bins must go out
And the fish tank is waiting for you.

Then you print all the stuff, all the research and notes
For the workshop you’re helping to run…
And you’re checking the weather, ’cause you’ll be outdoors
And you really could do with some sun…

Now, by this time it’s late and you still havenet dined,
So you snack on some crisps and a cake,
But there’s writing needs doing and emails to sort
…And there’s not one bit that doesn’t ache.

I’m exhausted, I tell you, it’s been a rough week,
Though I know that its all for the best,
Because in a few days I am going away…
I could certainly do with a rest!

    My absolute bar-none best vacation? The Hub took all the kids and the dog away for a week of camping. And even though the kids said they would notify Child Protective Services if he ever tried to do it again, it was a week of blessed peace in a house that stayed clean and especially quiet. Nobody cried or threw up or complained about what I did or didn’t serve at mealtime. Best holiday ever.

    I plan to get away and visit the sea as soon as my body decrees the possibility! I’m hoping the thought of it will get me there quicker!

    I’m thinking about all that work. Looking around here. Feeling guilty because I promised I was going to do the house today but I’m tired and I haven’t done it. I think I’m getting too old for this.

    Oh yay for you Sue! Will this be a working holiday as usual or taking some time for yourself (I hope) 🙂 And I must say, although you make the story entertaining with rhyme, I’m with you- the preparation just to go on vacation should be grounds for prolonging the vacation, lol. 🙂 I hope you have a great time wherever you’re going. 🙂 xx
