The dreaded MOT…

It is that time of year that all motorist’s dread
When the car needs a new MOT,
When you worry in case the old girl’s nearly dead…
And she surely won’t get off scot-free.

So you drop it off down at the garage at dawn
On the chance that they might get it done,
Take a taxi to work, and then nibble your nails,
‘Cause the wait for the verdict’s no fun.

“Want the good news or bad?” says the guy on the phone,
As he passes the sentence of death,
“She has failed, but we could do the work that she needs,”
You can just hear the intake of breath…

“It’ll cost you a bit, but she’s not a bad car,
We might even get to her tomorrow…”
You reply with a ‘please’, as you total the cost,
Wondering if you should beg, steal or borrow…

That night you won’t sleep as you worry and fret
Just in case they find something unthought of…
‘Cause they most often do, and they’ll add to the bill
Other things they had not made report of.

‘Cause you’ve got to have wheels, for without ’em you’re stuck
So you pace like a little caged lion.
‘Cause your home is too far from the rest of the world
And your car is the thing you rely on…

You could launch an appeal, maybe mortgage the dog?
You could sleep in the car at a pinch…
But you must pass the test or your roads will be closed
So you’ll pay and just try not to flinch.

Then the phone call comes through, and you raise up your eyes
To the heavens for someone to thank
And you sigh with relief that it passed it at all,
(Even though the bill’s broken the bank).<

“She will need some more work…and the price will be high…”
But for now, if it ain’t broke, don’t meddle!
Euphoric, united once more with your wheels
You can’t wait to put foot to the pedal!

My wheels must pass a similar yearly test here in Texas. Luckily, the blue beauty has passed for another year. Yay!

  6. My 10 year old Peugeot 206 failed it’s MOT in 2015 having romped it in every other, but this was a different garage (hm). We got it through but weren’t happy with the replacement exhaust as it wasn’t a good fit, though an approved part. We decided to sell it to a garage that bought second hand cars and got a good deal. I lost £2000 in ‘depreciation’ compared to what I paid for it new in 2005 (I got a brilliant deal, and cashback!).

  9. At least in this one thing, I am lucky. My son is a state automobile inspector. We pass and if we need fixing, we also get fixed. At least something usually goes right!
