Thank you to Sue for letting me write a post for her blog and helping to promote, Legends of Windemere: Warlord of the Forgotten Age.  This is the final book of my fantasy adventure series, which means after 15 volumes the champions and the Baron will meet for the first and last time. All of the temples, setbacks, spells, and torments have led to this point where good faces evil for the fate of the world.  Of course, you can’t just go into your greatest battle without some preparation.  So, what are some things to consider before heading out?

1. Check all of your equipment and make sure they are in working order. Nothing is more embarrassing than charging into battle and the strap on your saddle snaps to send you to the ground.  Blades breaking and running out of ammunition are other things that can get you killed.  Just take an hour or ask someone who isn’t busy to help.  Your unpunctured organs will thank you for it.
2. Get some sleep and eat well because you’re going to need all of the energy you can get. I know your nerves are strained and you’re having nightmares about what might be in your future.  Let those fade away for a bit because you won’t be saving any words if you’re groggy.  Besides, a large yawn is just asking your enemy to throw something in your mouth.  It could be a chocolate pie or it could be a fireball, but do you really want to test fate and find out?
3. There is always a chance that you won’t be coming back alive, so spend some time with your loved ones. Whether it be in person, through magic, or over the phone, it helps to get your emotional affairs in order.  Maybe it will give you some added confidence and strength that will see you through to end.  Either way, you don’t want to leave things unsaid because it’s plain rude.
4. Make sure you know where you’re going for the final battle. This might sound silly, but imagine heading out to amazing fanfare.  Trumpets are blaring, people are cheering, and roses are flying with the promise of thorns to the cornea.  Only problem is that you went through the wrong city gate and now you have to walk around the big wall to get on the right road.  Sure, you could head far enough away that nobody sees what you’re doing, but that will cost you time.
5. For the villain: Don’t sit around and wait for the good guys to show up.  Polish your armor, hit the gym, trim your evil beard, and make yourself look presentable.  Don’t be a slob.  Seriously, this sit on your butt until the finale is why so many bad guys lose.  You lack stamina and spending all day on those uncomfortable chairs is a quick path to hemorrhoids.
6. Try not to use too much of your magic before the battle. Practicing and studying is one thing.  Wasting all of that energy because you’re nervous is similar to not tending to your equipment.  This means no using wind magic to pour a glass of water or teleporting a turkey dinner directly from the kitchen.  Get up and walk for these things.  What are you a lazy villain?
7. This is a small, simple suggestion, so work with me here. I know it’s going to sound ridiculous, but I assure you that this is a good one.  MAKE A PLAN!  Seriously, you have a general idea of what you’re walking into.  Don’t go in blind.  Sit down for dinner with everyone and discuss a plan.  It could go right out the window, but at least you tried.  Better than charging in like a bunch of heavily armed toddlers on a sugar rush.
