Beautiful people

I took far too many photographs in Glastonbury…and so far the tale of that weekend has not reached its culmination with the raising of the Maypole! But there were so many fabulous costumes, so many beautiful people, that it seems a shame to leave them to languish in my folders.

There was every conceivable variety of Green Man and Woman. There were knights and Spring Maidens, Arthurian figures and fairies… and so many May blossom wreaths that the air of the town was fragrant.

They were beautiful people… all of them. Not because they were dressed in flowers and velvet, but because there was a shared buzz in the air… a genuine feeling of celebration… and more than anything, because they were out there being themselves.

I had been wearing a long green dress the first day … the next day it was jeans and jumper, but I still wore a wreath of May. No-one cared… Whether they were robed and painted, or in street clothes, men and women, flower crowned, no-one looked self-conscious. They had chosen to wear what felt right and did not give a hoot who was looking.

Glastonbury is not the perfect community; it has its tensions and factions like any other town, but there, there are very many people working assiduously to heal those tensions. The celebrations that had begun with the lighting of the Unity Candle seemed to have caught that spirit of unity on both a communal and individual level. It was not just those who were part of the proceedings who seemed to have relaxed into the moment, but those who had come to watch and just ‘be there’. And there is something about that… something light and infectious.

It does make me wonder just how much we miss by infecting each other…and re-intecting ourselves… with negative emotions, mediocrity and the drabness of the stressful, everyday lives most of us lead…and how different our lives might be if, instead, we could all feel at ease with who we are and the face we show the world. We  just need to remember that the masks we wear are our own choice… and that true beauty has little to do with appearances.

    Fantastic blog and the pictures are great! For those wishing to join us and dress up, remember Samhain celebrations are less than 6 months away. As Town Crier (representing “officialdom” for want of a better word) yet being centrally involved, helps in some small way, I hope, to heal any divisions in the community.
