No pleasing some folk…

Outside, the heat-haze writhes and seethes

In hellish desert air,

The sun paints blackened shadows

On an earth that’s parched and bare…

The aircon in the car is bust

Or else I’d live in there.

*

It’s summer, and the weather’s turned,

The sun came out to play…

For months we’ve moaned of cold and rain

And wished they’d go away;

And now I wish that it would rain

To cool the torrid day.

*

It’s only twenty-five degrees,

(That’s Celsius, mind you)

Though last week, there was snow and hail,

Now summer skies are blue,

And like a wilted lettuce

I just wish a storm would brew.

*

But never mind, tomorrow

It will all change once again,

According to the weather man

We’ll probably get rain…

‘Cause this is British weather

And we do love to complain.

  5. Wonderful words, but please no rain. I am very comfortable with the sun here in “bavarian siberia”. A little bit of italian feeling. 😉 Michael

You’ll never hear me complaining about the sun or the heat (except for the lack of it). This is the second day I’ve been able to be in the garden without a fleece. I’ve been casting clouts with abandon. I’ve got masses of things I should be doing – like work – but they can all wait until the weather changes. As you say, that will probably be soon. Off back out to feel the sun sink down into my bones.

  10. Ha, ha. I don’t know what you’d do here, Sue. It’s about 36 Celsius here now and was in the 40’s. In northern India, it’s still in the 40’s Celsius. 😀 — Suzanne

I worked weeding flowerbeds almost all day yesterday, and it was 82+ (F) the whole time! Lots of sweat rolled off, so I drank a gatorade when I came in. It is not only important to stay hydrated, but important to keep sodium levels aligned. I really liked the poem; as a matter of fact, I have yet to read one of your poems I didn’t like.

Thanks, Rae…It is looking like that kind of heat here today…so I am staying in with the blinds drawn as much as possible until the sunmoves my windows into shadow 🙂
I used to work as a window dresser, and in summer, we fried behind glass and under spotlights too…and took salt tablets.
