Lawnmower blues

It rained,so I can’t cut the grass,
I did it yesterday…
While I was ill, it grew so much
The small dog lost her way.

I’d conjured up a strimmer thing
And wrestled with the shears,
My poor lawn looks as if
Its not been manicured for years.

And then the mower wouldn’t go
With screwdriver and knife
I operated on the thinng
And forced it back to life.

It needs more than a cut or two
To bring it back in line,
So, foolishly, I thought I’d start…
Assuming I’d be fine.

I huffed and puffed to mow it down
I’d strimmed it first as well…
But by the second mower pass
You couldn’t really tell.

A mini haystack had appeared,
The compost overflowed,
The air was snowing shredded grass
The lawn looked barely mowed.

I’ll cut it once again, I thought,
Or maybe use the sickle…
But now it’s just a soggy mess
‘Cause English weather’s fickle.

The small dog rolls her eyes and sighs,
“Why struggle so to mow?
It’s raining cats and dogs out there…
It’s only going to grow!”

If I could just take down the fence,
Invite the cows to roam,
The wilderness that once was lawn
Might once more feel like home.

  7. Cute poem, but it sounds like the grass is getting the better of you, Sue.

I think my little bit of lawn (Much that once was grass has been taken over by a creeper sort of thing.) is getting to resemble yours. The lawnmower needs a new blade and the old one, which has hit too many rocks, is rusted on tight. Sympathy!

  9. Such a fun poem, Sue. I really could picture poor Ani losing her way in the long green grass.

Before I reached the end I was thinking about those cows. A couple of sheep might be better, though, if you can find a friendly farmer.

I was thinking of goats, since they seem nice and will eat trash, too. Ha ha! Hope you are going to wrangle with the garden and yard while winning instead of losing the battle to the rain and weather! Sue, it is fun to read poems with humor interspersed into them. Smiles, Robin

Anne of Green Gables would’ve just taken down that fence and let the cows come over. 😉

  13. I don’t know about you, but I think we need sheep or maybe llamas. Our mower is too big and heavy for me OR Garry. I’ve never been more sorry I never bought that little tractor!

Let the cows in, but tread carefully – they tend to leave presents.

Someone near me has laid lush dark green artificial grass and it looks amazing! No more wrestling with the mower and breaking your back in the process…

  18. You have reaffirmed the benefits of gravel paths and no grass. I am forever thankful for a grass free garden…😊

I bet Ani just loved it! But beware of ticks – both you and Ani. Maybe one of those weedwacker things would be a way to cut the heavy stuff, but around here, people are renting goats. A day or two of their ministrations and the area will be shorn clean!

I so know the feeling, Sue. I’m not allowed to mow the lawn, Becca does, for health reasons but also because so far, I’ve blown up one lawnmower, one just fell to bits and tried to attack the lawn with a pair of kitchen scissors. So I am retired from lawn mowing. xxx
