I Made an Album!

The year – 1972. The Christmas present was an acoustic guitar. By 1973, I was already in a school band formed with my neighbor (who sadly passed away last year). I was writing songs back then and we all saved up money to go and record one in a local studio. It was called Norma Jean. The recording is long lost these days but I recall it was played on the local radio station and at school in assembly. A few years later, I wrote six songs for a local performance of a play and one or two were again featured on radio. Meanwhile, I was meeting people like Sting, Wreckless Eric, Paul Young, Billy Idol, and many more as stage manager at my college students Union. I could tell you a few stories…..but I digress. I would sit for hours strumming in my room but for some reason, I never really did commit to joining a band and seeing what I could do.

I’m the sort of person who just thinks that sometimes, you should stretch yourself whatever other people think and I’m sure there are a few out there who think I still have dreams of being a pop star at age 56. However, I discovered that these days, anyone can do anything if they so desire. Even put out an album!

About 6-months ago, I bought an electric guitar. I hadn’t played in years. I wanted to play it through my iMAC and that is when I discovered that my MAC came with a recording package called Garageband. So, I learned how to use it, how to connect guitar, microphone and so on. My initial thought was to record a few of the songs I had written in the past for posterity and my kids. What I hadn’t banked on was the sudden surge of creativity that I experienced.

By the beginning of December, I had a whole directory of songs. I selected what I think are the best twelve and decided I would tick an item of my Bucket List – make a record. I did some research and discovered that just like publishing, music has gone digital. That means ANYONE can release a record for a small fee. I had to play with formats and navigate my way through learning about outlets for digital music and so on but last week I set up The Early Years and by Sunday, it was out. You can hear it on Spotify, and other streaming sites and buy it on iTunes, Amazon, and so on.

Why The Early Years? Well, it does have three songs on it I wrote back in the 70’s and 80’s and it is something I probably should have done in my early years as opposed to now. My dream is to have a known band or artist record one of my compositions – but, having put out a record, I would like people to hear it and maybe a few will enjoy it too. You never know because these days, anything is possible.

Give it a listen and see what you think. If you like it, tell others for me would you?

Available at spotify, iTunes, Appple Music, Deezer, Amazon Music, Google Play, Tidal, Beatport, Juno, 7Digital, Shazam, Napster, eMusic and more…..
