Notes from a small dog – best friends…

ani 015“Such a good girlie…” she says, scritching that spot behind my ear, “…for a change.” Which I think was a compliment.. But whatever, she seems to be pleased with me. And cuddles are always welcome.

I do try… I just don’t always get stuff right. Well, not in her eyes anyway… I’m s’posed to  bark at intruders, but she says the postman is allowed to deliver letters. So why she buries her head in hands and starts muttering about Bill every time he comes, I don’t know…

An’ it’s not my fault if she leaves her ornaments in the way when I’m chasing off flies! After this week, you’d think she’d be glad I was an insectivore! I’m pretty good with spiders too, given half a chance…

Ani hunting spiders

I think it was the whole spider thing she was talking about though, when she said I’d been good. You wouldn’t believe what she put me through! First she comes in moaning and plonks her foot on a chair right on my tennis-ball delivery spot! Granted, the foot was interesting, but would she let me help fix it? No… soon as the tongue went out, I got a ‘no!’ Can’t say I didn’t try…

Next day, she tells me the usual fib. “Won’t be long, girlie.” Now, I know, ’cause she’s explained, that chickens may go cheep but don’t come cheap… so she has to earn chicken-money…so she has to go out. I get that. I just have a snooze. But let’s be fair…her ‘not long’ and mine are a bit different.

This time, though, she was ages, even for her!

You can’t hide from The Nose, so when she came back…without chicken, I might add… I knew she’d done the normal stuff, but she smelled like the bathroom when she’s cleaned it…all disinfectanty… and someone had been sticking sharp things in her and making her leak. I could tell. She wasn’t happy either. Then she started acted weird and went to bed…

That’s all very well, but you know, it was early… and she says I’m too big for a cat-flap and it makes it a long night…

…’specially when I could hear really weird noises from upstairs. An’ I couldn’t get to investigate…

But she back came down, stuck her head in things she normally sticks the other end in, opened the garden door for me…and went back to bed.

Whoa… really weird! Doors open in the dark? So that’s me on duty all night! Someone‘s got to guard the place! Now, I may be a daft dog as some people call me, but even I’d worked out there was something not right, you know. She doesn’t leave the doors and windows all open at night as a rule, no matter how much I ask. And she usually manages a cuddle or three.

She crawled down groaning about dawn… shut the door when she normally opens itfed me and staggered back to bed. Er, hello? Cuddles? Walk?? But no… nothing.

Then one of my boys turns up and dashes upstairs and she’s whisked away in her dressing gown thingy… and doesn’t come back till late with the boy and his baby! But she goes back to bed!!! I managed to dash upstairs and see if she was alright… she smelled funny and had leaked some more…and she groaned when I bounced on the bed… At least I got to play with the baby 🙂

Next day, she’s up and down the stairs…mainly up… and the door’s open again. I’d been on duty for ages. Then my boy came back, so at least she had some milk (I’d been missing sharing her stuff…it’s important for pack morale you know…)

ani 004

Anyway, she made it to the sofa that night, so I sat on her feet to keep them warm, so she’d know I’d missed her which didn’t go down too well for some reason… and that’s when she said I’d been a good girl and did all the scritching.

The daft thing really is that I wasn’t ‘being good’. She’s my two-legs… I worry, you know. I have to look after her… and I’m sort of fond of her, so what else would I do?

She calls me a small dog and keeps saying its the little things that make life beautiful. Like the buzzy thing that kept making her eyes smile.

Anyway, she’s still sleeping lots, but I’m back on foot-warming duty, though thankfully she’s thinking straight enough now to lock the doors at night…ani nick stu (2)

And there’s a spot on my sofa waiting for me.

I let her use it when she’s not well…that way, I can see she’s alright.

Much love, Ani xxx

Good thing Ani is on the job, or we wouldn’t get ANY info. Hope that foot is on the mend. Apparently Ani needs to keep up her spider assault.

Oh, Ani, it must have been a distressing and worrying few days for you – and for your human. I really hope she is beginning to feel better. And will someone PLEASE catch the ruddy spider which started all this?

Aw, Ani, this time she was really sick. You did your best and I know she loves you for it, but this time she needed two legged help. I’m glad to know she’s on the mend so you can chase tennis balls again. You WERE a good dog! Hugs to both of you!

  18. Good girl Ani. I’m looking after my Mummy ‘cos she hasn’t been well and was away for a night and I had to stay somewhere else ‘cos my Daddy was worried too. I’m leaning on her feet now (they smell a bit, but I’ll let her off) that way if she tries to get up I’ll know and can keep an eye on her. Hope your Mummy feels better soon. Maggie x

How lovely to hear from Ani again, it’s been a long while. She’s just so cute and loving. She warms my heart so I can only imagine what she is for you. And so sorry to hear you are ill Sue. My goodness, you’ve had your share, first the foot and now, I’m not sure what you have but it doesn’t sound at all pleasant. Do get well soon. ❤

  22. Good to hear you’ve been on your best nursing duty, Ani. I’m sure there will be lots of treats in it for you and she won’t mind when you bark at Bill the Postman again.
My boys are off to London, tomorrow. But I’m going to stay with my favourite aunt and uncle. I get loads of treats while there, but don’t tell the boys.
    Lots of barks,
    Toby
