Beyond the door… writing prompt

hobbit door image: scvincent.com

This little doorway stands around three feet high. You can see nothing beyond the wall except a veil of trees…it intrigues me.

Michelle Clements James from Book Chat suggested I use the photo as a writing prompt and I thought it was an excellent idea.

So, in 100 words or less… what do you think lies beyond the door?

Create a post on your own blog by Tuesday March 1st and link back to this post with a pingback. All posts will be included in a round up on Thursday.

Feel free to use the photo in your post if you wish.

Not sure what the following is – not poetry, not prose, but 100 word count (including credit/link to you) and proudly published with ‘u’ left as is – whether American spelling or grammar checks like it or not – 🙂 https://ballybin.wordpress.com/2016/02/24/lil-door/

I think behind this door is the sleeping quarters of some Shetland ponies. So perhaps this is a door for Shetland ponies to jump through as they leap into the field to enjoy the day, the grass and the morning’s exercise. Nothing better than a jump to start the day especially if you are a Shetland pony.

Okay, I’ve just written this. It started out quite nicely and then went somewhere… darker. Slightly over a hundred words but I hope you don’t mind 🙂

‘Beyond the door the pathway waits,
Through trees and tiny fairy gates,
    Lined with velvet petals sweet
    Mosses soft beneath your feet
    Branches whisper as you pass
    Trailing fingers through long grass
Singing sigh of leaves that fall
As you approach the elven hall
Twigs like fingers pull your hair
    Vines appearing from thin air
To wrap you in a green embrace
Leaves to cover up your face
    Music lulls you deeper still
    Pulled into the fairy hill
There to spend your final hours
    Bound amongst the scattered flowers
So take the pathway if you dare
You know not what you’ll find in there…’

    My little go, Sue
‘You have to guess what’s behind it or it won’t open.’ Sally looked smug.
George, 2 years younger, asked. ‘Is that right Grandpa?’
‘Reckon. Been the legend since anyone recalls. Say what you think into the keyhole.’
George leant forward. Grandpa stopped him. ‘You only get one go. Don’t waste it.’
All the children tried, but George refused to try. He just listened.
The day Sally was due to leave for university, George took her to the door. ‘It’s time.’
Sally smiled as he said, ‘Nothing.’
    ‘That’s rid…’
The door swung open, revealing a hole as black as death.
