Sunday morning….

The mad rush of Saturday, trying to get everything prepared, to cover all bases and failing abysmally to catch up after a week of mayhem is followed by a gentle awakening to a perfect Sunday morning. Luxuriant moments of stillness and warmth, where every muscle, just for once, feels relaxed and comfortable. Birds serenade the morning, shafts of pale light tease me to open my eyes…

… then the dive out of bed, the lunge for the dressing gown and the ungainly stumble in the general direction of the kettle. I need coffee. Lots of coffee. Time to move the stiffness out of the achy bits…. No-one should have to be out of bed this fast on a Sunday. Granted, working every day of the week means I’m always up early, but this is ridiculous… I shouldn’t be up before the sun in the middle of summer…

The dogless house seems too quiet. Ani went to see her friends last night, as the day will be too long to leave her alone and starts way too early to drop her on my way to Nick’s this morning.

Run through the mental checklist of things to take, things packed in the car already. Check the map one last time and curse the broken printer… then into the shower.

Warm steam curling in tendrils in spite of the pathetic dribble the thing produces this morning. There will only be me and Nick from our family. Eva and Heather, of course, Nick’s physios with whom he is racing… crowds of others, of course! But how many other people am I taking with me today? ‘Truly impressive!’ This from the doctor who saved my son’s life. He’d seen Nick’s interview on the news. So many heartfelt wishes from family and friends… the wonderful messages and support from across the world. Once again, Nick has touched hearts… and that has touched ours.

For a moment I am lost, back ‘there’, sticking messages in the book we kept beside his bed for his friends to write in, a timeline of memories in case he had none, for those long days and weeks of coma when he could have none…

Messages that had come from across the world then, too. From complete strangers who had heard my son’s story on the news, through the grapevine, through friends of friends… It was an incredible thing and it gave us so much hope and comfort to know that people of all faiths and none, of so many nations, were praying, sending healing and keeping my sons in their thoughts. Some were famous… authors, teachers… names internationally known. I remember a surreal moment, being driven the 100 miles we drove every day to the hospital with Uri Geller on the phone… Most were not famous… they were just people like us. People with sons, brothers, children and parents who could feel and who had been moved by Nick’s plight… It had mattered so much… something so incredible it helped anchor me somehow, but not in the desperate reality we were living, not in that hell… but in a place of love and hope…

Dress, dry hair, just time for another quick coffee before I leave to collect Nick for our journey to Windsor… and the triathlon that he says is ‘beyond his wildest dreams’.

He wants to win. He knows he won’t… but he will try.

To my mind, he has already won.

Good luck Sue and Nick! This is a great day, regardless of where Nick places in the race. He’s a man, so of course he wants to win, but this is about so much more than that. Enjoy the day! I’ll be thinking of you, hope the sun is shining on you. Xxx

you really do have a tingle factor to your writing, you know. Can’t read this without some sort of wet eye syndrome. Maybe it’s having my own lad to worry about constantly… as you do.
