Notes from a small dog XIX

Funny how we see things differently, isn’t it? I’ve heard you talking about that doggy smell. We quite like it, but it seems that not all humans do. Our sense of smell is so much better than yours, of course, so we can read scent in a way that you just can’t manage. I can tell where she’s been, who she’s seen, what she’s been up to. I can read her like you read a newspaper. But I’m not happy with what my nose is telling me lately.

She smells funny.

She’s wearing these big white things, and she doesn’t smell right. I’m not sure I like it. I’ve sat with my nose glued to them for ages, but I can’t get to anything to do much about it. I think she’s been to see the vet.

And I don’t like the vet either.

And she’s not taking me for walks in the sunshine! She’ll play ball for a bit, but not as much as usual. And she won’t let me on her knee.  So I’m not happy.

I think she’s getting worried because I’ve been so quiet. But I’m not daft… well, not entirely anyway. She doesn’t need me bouncing as much as usual. I’ve even let the birds get away with murder the last few days. Hardly barked at anything except the postman! Just curl up next to her feet or try and help with the housework. She doesn’t seem to appreciate my efforts though…

What else can I do?

It’s a horrible feeling.

I know when I’m not well I‘ll always go to her for cuddles. But I don’t usually need to. She’s always there with her hand in my fur when I’m sick. Then she’ll stroke me and talk to me, so I know I’m not in trouble. Even if it was the best rug… Then, later, she’ll make me nice things to eat. Like chicken. I’d be sick every day if I thought she’d give me chicken…

I just want her back to normal, laughing and running with me in the fields as if she’s a pup again. And stalking me with the camera while I stalk the pheasants.

They are stupid birds, you know. Nearly as bad as pigeons…but at least pigeons don’t sleep on the ground where I can creep up on them….dawn 001

Time for a nap, I think. Dream of feathers.

Much love,

Ani xxx

  1. Poor Ani. She doesn’t understand.

Are you doing better with recovery? I hope so. What an awful accident. I can’t imagine.

    Dearest Ani,
So sorry to hear that vet-like smells have infiltrated your world – but chin up, it won’t last forever! It’s hard, sitting by, while someone we love is in pain, but never underestimate the awe-inspiring comfort you are delivering just by being willing to sit beside and share the journey. You are a better dog than I – when my roommate smells like the vet, I don’t even think to pick up a dust rag – I just lay next to the couch, hovering, in case she needs me. So kudos to you for being willing to do (ugh!) housework.
I agree about the intelligence level of birds – they are rather insipid fools – but my roommate seems to take delight in their chatter, so I’ve learned to sit and ignore all their pointless gossip.
    What’s that?
Sorry, Ani, roomie wants her turn at the computer, so time for me to sign off – Take care!

      Hi Oakley,

Don’t tell everyone about the housework, but I did think it would be a good game to kidnap the floorcloth and distract her..

She’s been a bit quiet today.. seems to be a bit soggy in lots of places. I think she may have to go back to the vets, you know.

Still. I’ll be here when she gets back to give her a cuddle.

Give your roomie a snuggle from me.
      Love,

  3. Ani, try your best to be a good girl and let your “mummy” rest. She’ll be back to her ball playing ways soon enough.

  4. Dogs just sense when things are out of kilter. Today my brother posted about when he was 8 years old and sick in bed. His German Shepherd, General, laid by his side until he began to feel better. Then, General went on his merry way, confident that everything was OK again.

Ani … just be patient. Sue will be back to her old self soon. (Take care, Sue.)

Thank you Judy. I’ll be glad when she can chase me with my grooming brush.. no reason to make it easy, she needs the exercise… and this loose stuff itches in the heat 🙂

      meanwhile there are balls…

      Love,
